Welcome to the President’s Report for April

Did you know that Caroline Miskin, who died in June 1878 and whose grave is in the Museum cemetery, was the mother of William & Alfred Miskin? Alfred was the Manager of the Bundall Sugar Plantation and William, a Director. Both were related to Julius Holland through marriage. We have plenty of copies of Letters to Bundall for sale and this book gives a great overview of the history of the area along with many old photos.

At our last AGM we discussed the name change of our Museum, the important change is to remove Hinterland from the name.

We are considering the “Gold Coast Historical Society & Museum Inc”.

News in Brief:

  • Volunteers recently held an enjoyable Yum Cha luncheon and plans are afoot for more social occasions in the future. We would like you to join us for the next luncheon and a chat with the volunteers. Date and venue will be provided.

  • Visitors numbers this month were 56. Volunteers hours worked this month were 415hrs

  • The Museum has an extensive collection of cross cut saws that were used in the local timber industry. We have 6 different types of cross cut saws from a total of 15 saws.

  • A major project has commenced to ensure every article in the museum is catalogued.

For Sale:

We have plenty of souvenir tea towels of both the Gold Coast and Brisbane for sale.

Come and see the range of plants for sale which have been potted up by volunteers, there is a limited number of potted Paw Paw. (wandering Jew is free).

Volunteers are needed to help with restoration:

Tim has commenced cataloguing the outside machinery, trying to identify manufacturing dates and previous owners, which is proving difficult.

The two ploughs built late 1800’s need restoring before they end in a heap of rusting scrap.

Do you know a retiree who could assist in restoration of antique farm equipment?

Garden and maintenance:

As you can read there are many opportunities for help with projects at the museum.

Visit us for a cuppa on any Sunday, Tuesday or Wednesday and see what is happening.
